La Morena - Huehuetenango, Guatemala
Established in 2016, the La Morena program has been a trailblazer in empowering talented female coffee growers by thoughtfully connecting them to the global supply chain, all while tackling the pressing issue of gender inequality head-on. Initially, a dedicated group of four IWCA (International Women’s Coffee Alliance) members imported an impressive total of 32 boxes of high-quality green coffee beans, a delightful micro-lot that quickly sold out due to its remarkable flavor and uniqueness. This resounding success not only established the La Morena name but also helped spark a growing interest in their exceptional coffees among consumers and roasters alike. By the year 2023, more than 800 passionate women farmers from the vibrant regions of Huehuetenango and Baja Verapaz enthusiastically participated in the program, expanding their reach from a modest 2,000 lbs. to a significant platform that effectively addresses important gender issues plaguing the coffee industry. As a result of this exposure, roasters are buzzing with excitement and eager for more of the extraordinary offerings from these empowered women!
Oconee Coffee Roasters’ tasting notes: cacao nibs, brown sugar, and stone fruit.
